Research Asso­ci­ate (Postdoc) - Chronic and genetic kid­ney dis­ease


Work­ing field:

The research object­ive of the work­group is to bet­ter under­stand and tackle the chal­lenges related to chronic kid­ney dis­ease (CKD) caused by auto­somal poly­cystic kid­ney dis­ease (ADPKD) with the ulti­mate goal of improv­ing patients’ lives. This pos­i­tion offers an innov­at­ive, mul­tidiscip­lin­ary, and inter­sect­oral work­group that aims to develop cre­at­ive solu­tions for the dia­gnosis and treat­ment of ADPKD, the most com­mon mono­gen­etic dis­ease.

Within our auto­somal dom­in­ant poly­cystic kid­ney dis­ease (ADPKD) group we are seek­ing a postdoc­toral can­did­ate for a com­bined molecu­lar and clin­ical pro­ject entitled "Indu­cing apop­tosis in kid­ney cysts – A novel approach to cur­ing ADPKD, the most com­mon mono­gen­etic dis­ease".
We offer a chal­len­ging trans­la­tional pro­ject in a well-organ­ized, inter­na­tional, and high-pro­file research envir­on­ment within the Depart­ment of Neph­ro­logy and Med­ical Intens­ive Care at the Char­ité in Ber­lin. Our group has a long­stand­ing his­tory of invest­ig­at­ing the (patho)physiology of kid­ney dis­ease. Build­ing on pre­lim­in­ary find­ings, we aim to test whether the induc­tion of apop­tosis in tubu­lar cells of a PKD1 knock­out mouse model atten­u­ates the cystic phen­o­type and improves kid­ney func­tion by decreas­ing the viab­il­ity of cyst lin­ing cells. Our pre­vi­ous work has shown that cyst lin­ing cells strongly express HIF1α in the con­text of ADPKD. Because the HIF path­way may be con­sidered a viab­il­ity factor for cells in a hyp­oxic envir­on­ment and there­fore is linked with cell death and sur­vival decisions, we will invest­ig­ate this inter­face with the ulti­mate goal of identi­fy­ing novel upstream and down­stream tar­gets to delay the pro­gress­ive loss of kid­ney func­tion due to cyst growth. The aim is to select­ively induce apop­tosis by decreas­ing cell viab­il­ity in cyst lin­ing cells and there­fore to ameli­or­ate the cystic phen­o­type in in ADPKD. To this end, a wide vari­ety of cut­ting-edge tech­niques will be applied includ­ing cel­lu­lar and molecu­lar bio­lo­gical, bio­chem­ical and in vivo (Mus mus­cu­lus) pro­ced­ures.
Sci­entific staff is given suf­fi­cient time to carry out their own sci­entific work in accord­ance with their employ­ment rela­tion­ship.


  • PhD degree in Bio­logy, Bio­chem­istry, Molecu­lar/Cell Bio­logy or related fields
  • Back­ground know­ledge in kid­ney physiology
  • Strong interest in trans­la­tional approaches (from bench to bed­side), incl. will­ing­ness to carry out animal exper­i­mental research, cooper­a­tion with aca­demic and industry part­ners
  • Strong back­ground and prac­tical exper­i­ence in in cel­lu­lar, molecu­lar bio­lo­gical, and bio­chem­ical research
  • Know­ledge and prac­tical exper­i­ence in hand­ling mouse mod­els of kid­ney dis­ease is advant­age­ous but not essen­tial
  • Abil­ity to work inde­pend­ently, effi­ciently and goal-ori­ented
  • Super­vi­sion of PhD-stu­dents and med­ical doc­tor­ate stu­dents and tech­nical assist­ants
