The Max Planck Soci­ety and Freie Uni­versität Ber­lin (Depart­ment of His­tory and Cul­tural Stud­ies and Depart­ment of Philo­sophy and Human­it­ies) are seek­ing to appoint

a Pro­fessor of the His­tory of Sci­ence / the His­tory of Know­ledge, who would also be respons­ible for lead­ing a Max Planck Research Group (at the Max Planck Insti­tute for the His­tory of Sci­ence).

Salary grade W2; fixed-term appoint­ment for five years (pub­lic employee)

Work­ing field:

Respons­ib­il­it­ies:
The can­did­ate will lead a Max Planck Research Group at the Max Planck Insti­tute for the His­tory of Sci­ence (MPIWG) and is expec­ted to teach and con­duct research in the His­tory of Sci­ence and the His­tory of Know­ledge at the Freie Uni­versität Ber­lin. The stand­ard teach­ing load is one course (2 hours per week) per semester.

The can­did­ate will be expec­ted to par­ti­cip­ate in col­lab­or­at­ive pro­jects between the Max Planck Insti­tute for the His­tory of Sci­ence and the uni­versit­ies of Ber­lin on the his­tory of know­ledge and to con­trib­ute to other ongo­ing and planned col­lab­or­a­tions.

The Max Planck Insti­tute for the His­tory of Sci­ence will offer fund­ing for a research fel­low or for vis­it­ing schol­ars as well as sec­ret­arial sup­port and grant fund­ing.

Appoint­ment require­ments are gov­erned by sec­tion 100 of the Ber­lin Higher Edu­ca­tion Act (Ber­liner Hoch­schul­ge­setz).

Fur­ther require­ments for appoint­ment:
Early-career research­ers are sought who demon­strate an excel­lent research record in the area of the his­tory of sci­ence/the his­tory of know­ledge. The applic­ant’s qual­i­fic­a­tions in a spe­cific sub­ject area should relate to one of the fol­low­ing dis­cip­lines: human­it­ies, social sci­ences, human sci­ences, nat­ural sci­ences, engin­eer­ing, or an inter­dis­cip­lin­ary field such as area stud­ies, cul­tural stud­ies, digital human­it­ies etc. The can­did­ate’s research interests in the his­tory of sci­ence/the his­tory of know­ledge should align with those of the par­ti­cip­at­ing insti­tu­tions.

The can­did­ate will pos­sess a clear abil­ity to lead a research group and have inter­na­tional exper­i­ence in research and teach­ing in an aca­demic con­text. Exper­i­ence in obtain­ing external fund­ing such as grants is desir­able.
