The Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin is a joint medical faculty, which serves both Freie Universität Berlin and Humboldt Universität zu Berlin. As one of the largest university hospitals in Europe with an important history, it plays a leading role in research, teaching and clinical care. The Charité university hospital has also made a name for itself as a modern business with certifications in the medical, clinical and management fields.
PhD student (male/female)
An adverse in utero environment including chemical exposure is thought to contribute to impaired organ maturation and an increased disease risk later in life. We are interested in persistent epigenetic modifications in response to such exposures that potentially lead to long-term respiratory complications. This PhD project will complement our epidemiological studies by establishing and applying in vitro models for different exposure scenarios.
Your area of responsibilities:
The job holder will be part of a research group focusing on epigenetic modifications and health effects. In his/her project the job holder will particularly investigate the consequences of chemical exposure and oxidative stress. He/she will establish lung organoid cultures to study exposure effects in human adult lung and priming effects of an adverse environment during organ development. Different molecular biological techniques will be applied including whole genom bisulfid sequencing, pyrosequencing and qPCR. Epigenetic studies will be complemented by single cell RNA sequencing studies.
master degree in biology, biochemistry, molecular biotechnology or related disciplines
experiences with in vitro experimental studies and human cell culture models
fluent in spoken and written English
collaborative skills, enthusiasm, willingness to above-average commitment
