The Chair of Electromagnetic Theory conducts research in the simulation of semiconductor devices, which are the basis for all electronic appliances from smartphones over photovoltaics and high-speed data transfer to power electronics for electromobility. We develop simulation programs for the detailed description of physical processes within these devices. Additionally, charge carrier transport in novel semiconductor device types is investigated and optimized.

Work­ing field:

You will work on the relia­bi­lity ana­ly­sis of power semi­con­duc­tor devices, that are used for example in power swit­ches for auto­mo­tive app­li­ca­ti­ons. These relia­bi­lity issues are not only rele­vant for the indus­trial deploy­ment of such devices, but also inte­res­ting from a sci­en­ti­fic per­spec­tive, because the mecha­nisms of the degra­da­tion of these devices are not ent­i­rely unders­tood on a micro­sco­pic level. A simu­la­tion frame­work, deve­lo­ped at the insti­tute, models the so-cal­led hot-car­rier degra­da­tion of such power devices based on the micro­sco­pic descrip­tion of the trans­port of elec­trons and holes by the Boltz­mann-trans­port equa­tion. You will use and extend this simu­la­tion frame­work, whe­r­eby the impro­ve­ment of sui­ta­ble phy­si­cal models, the deve­lop­ment of sta­ble simu­la­tion algo­rithms and their highly effi­ci­ent nume­ri­cal imple­men­ta­tion for high-per­for­mance com­pu­ter clus­ters are of spe­cial inte­rest.
The pro­ject will be per­for­med in close col­la­bo­ra­tion with our indus­try part­ners.


A uni­ver­sity degree (Mas­ter or com­pa­ra­ble) in electri­cal engi­nee­ring or phy­sics with excel­lent results is man­da­tory. Expe­ri­ence in semi­con­duc­tor phy­sics, nume­rics and high-per­for­mance com­pu­ting is appre­cia­ted. Since you will work in an inter­na­tio­nal team, good Eng­lish skills, writ­ten and spo­ken, are requi­red.

What we of­fer:

The posi­tion is 3 years and is to be fil­led as soon as pos­si­ble. This is a full-time posi­tion.

The suc­cess­ful can­di­date has the oppor­tu­nity to pur­sue a doc­to­ral degree.

The salary is based on the Ger­man public ser­vice salary scale (TV-L).
