The majority of systems and services that are provided by computer science, electrical engineering and information technology finally are oriented on the needs of their human users. To successfully build such systems and services it essential to investigate and understand users and their behavior when interacting with technology. On the one hand, this understanding allows to derive design principles for human-machine-interfaces and to define requirements concerning the system and its underlying technologies. On the other hand, new available technologies do offer new possibilities regarding the design of such interfaces and the development of new kinds of interaction.
The Quality and Usability Lab is part of TU Berlin’s Faculty IV and deals with the design and evaluation of human-machine interaction. Here, the main subjects of our research are human perception, aspects of technical system that are related to the interaction as well as interaction design.

Working field:

Your core tasks in the project “Fix IT. Fixing IT for Women” (founded by BMBF) is the conception, realization, and further development of web platform. This platform will be used for distribution and management of learn and teaching material in STEM-projects with (and by) schoolgirls. Also, the platform should be used by the pupils for the development and presentation of the results in their projects.
Another and also important part of your work will be empirical research on usability and user experience. It is possible to use the experience from the project work for a dissertation at our chair.
The concrete tasks include, among other things:
  • development of a requirements analysis and the technical conception of the platform (in close cooperation with the project partners and potential users)
  • selection of appropriate technologies and frameworks
  • implementation/realization and further adaption of the platform
  • research on usability and user experience
  • publication and presentation of project and research results in scientific journals, at conferences, and in workshops

  • successfully completed university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) in computer science / informatics, media informatics, information systems (or an equivalent technical background)
  • verifiable, practicable experience in the realization of web application (back- and frontend, ideally full-stack)
  • well-founded experience in one or several of the following programming languages: Python, PHP or Java
  • experience with SQL-based databases, optional also with No-SQL databases
  • good knowledge about current frameworks for development of web applications
  • good knowledge about GIT, building-tools (e.g. Maven) and unit tests
  • language skills: German (equal to a native speaker), English fluent in writing and speaking
  • ideally and optional, knowledge about empirical studies and statistical data analysis
  • experience and joy of working in an interdisciplinary and international environment
  • experience in gender studies in the context of MINT subjects

How to apply:

Please send your application with the reference number and the usual documents (in particular letter of application, curriculum vitae, copies of certificates, job references, 1–2 academic letters of recommendation) preferably by E-Mail (combined in one pdf-file) to or in writing to Technische Universität Berlin - Der Präsident - Fakultät IV, Institut für Softwaretechnik und Theoretische Informatik, Quality and Usability Lab, Prof. Dr. Möller, Sekr. TEL 18, Ernst-Reuter-Platz 7, 10587 Berlin.

To ensure equal opportunities between women and men, applications by women with the required qualifications are explicitly desired. Qualified individuals with disabilities will be favored.

Please send copies only. Original documents will not be returned.
