RWTH Aachen - Institute for Power Electronics and Electrical Drives

The chair of Electrochemical Energy Conversion and Storage Systems is part of the Institute for Power Electronics and Electrical Drives and is based in the faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology of RWTH Aachen University. We are the biggest research group on university level (~ 70 scientists and engineers and more than 80 students) which focuses on the basics of battery technology and the system integration. We aim to understand the fundamentals of all relevant technologies and based on this simulate the electric, thermal and degradation behavior as well as implement diagnostic algorithms. We utilize high-end laboratory equipment, operate the biggest battery test centers at German universities, develop the needed electronics and prototype test equipment. Applications for our developments include mobile transportation (e.g. hybrid and electric vehicles, busses, on-board power supply) and stationary storage (e.g. off-grid power supply). By systematically analyzing the requirements of the applications, we can design the storage system and implement operating strategies and diagnostics. In conclusion, our research provides valuable contributions to important topics like electromobility and the transition to clean energy.

You actively work on pro­jects regar­ding the model­ling and simu­la­tion of lithium-ion-bat­te­ries for mobile and sta­tio­nary app­li­ca­ti­ons.
Your work could be cen­te­red around:
  • Deve­lop­ment of phy­si­cal-che­mi­cal bat­tery models
  • Deve­lop­ment of electri­cal/ther­mal and real-time bat­tery simu­la­ti­ons
  • Deve­lop­ment and design of expe­ri­ments for the para­me­te­riza­t­ion of the above models
The super­vi­sion of stu­dents’ the­ses is wis­hed for and an invol­ve­ment in teaching is pos­si­ble addi­tio­nally to your pro­ject rela­ted tasks. Tech­ni­cal dis­cus­sions with your col­leagues and in pro­ject con­sor­tia is pos­si­ble and wis­hed for since most topics are lin­ked by the focus on app­li­ca­tion. Our equip­ment inclu­des state of the art electri­cal and phy­si­cal-che­mi­cal tes­ting set-ups for cha­rac­te­ri­zing bat­tery sys­tems and the nee­ded hard­ware to per­form the simu­la­ti­ons.

We employ co-workers with a diploma, mas­ter degree (or equi­va­lent) in electri­cal engi­nee­ring, phy­sics, pro­cess engi­nee­ring, mate­ri­als sci­ence, infor­ma­tics or other rele­vant cour­ses.
You are inte­rested in co-working in pro­jects with part­ners from indus­try and aca­de­mia. Prior know­ledge of ther­mal and FVM model­ling and the basics about elec­tro­che­mi­cal sys­tems is bene­fi­cial but not a neces­sity.

What we of­fer:

The posi­tion is for 2 years and is to be fil­led as soon as pos­si­ble. an exten­sion of the con­tract for at least one addi­tio­nal year is plan­ned. This is a full-time posi­tion. It is also avail­able as part-time employ­ment per request.

The suc­cess­ful can­di­date has the oppor­tu­nity to pur­sue a doc­to­ral degree.

The salary cor­re­sponds to level EG 13 TV-L.
