The TU Dres­den is one of ele­ven Ger­man uni­ver­si­ties that were iden­ti­fied as an “excel­lence uni­ver­sity”. TUD has about 36.500 stu­dents and almost 5319 employees, 507 pro­fes­sors among them, and, thus, is the lar­gest uni­ver­sity in Sax­ony, today.

Having been com­mit­ted to sci­en­ces and the engi­nee­ring before the reuni­fi­ca­tion of Ger­many, TU Dres­den now is a multi-disci­pline uni­ver­sity, also offe­ring huma­nities and social sci­en­ces as well as medi­cine.

Rese­arch Asso­cia­tes / PhD stu­dents

The posi­ti­ons are avail­able at the next pos­si­ble date and initi­ally limi­ted to 3 years, with 50 % of the full­time weekly hours. A con­tract exten­sion for a fourth year is pos­si­ble. The period of employ­ment is gover­ned by the Fixed Term Rese­arch Con­tracts Act (Wis­sen­schafts­zeit­ver­trags­ge­setz – Wiss­ZeitVG). The posi­ti­ons aim at obtai­ning fur­ther aca­de­mic qua­li­fi­ca­tion (i.e. PhD).
The main rese­arch goal of the two posi­ti­ons is to inves­ti­gate beha­viou­ral and neu­ro­sci­ence prin­ci­ples of voice and face per­cep­tion in neu­ro­ty­pi­cal popu­la­ti­ons as well as in popu­la­ti­ons with deve­lop­men­tal per­son iden­tity reco­gni­tion defi­cits (i.e. pho­na­gno­sia and pro­so­pa­gno­sia). The posi­ti­ons are part of the Human Com­mu­ni­ca­tion Rese­arch Group led by Prof. Dr. Katha­rina von Kriegstein. The group is cur­rently based at the Max Planck Insti­tute for Human Cogni­tive and Brain Sci­en­ces in Leip­zig (http://www.cbs.mpg.de/independent-research-groups/human-communication) and will be newly esta­blis­hed by Octo­ber 1st 2017 at the TU Dres­den.

Work­ing field:

The pro­jects involve plan­ning and con­duc­ting neu­ro­sci­en­ti­fic expe­ri­ments, data ana­ly­sis, and pre­sen­ting and publis­hing sci­en­ti­fic results. One of the posi­ti­ons is plan­ned to work on pro­jects rela­ted to a com­pre­hen­sive neu­ro­i­ma­ging and beha­viou­ral study on deve­lop­men­tal pro­so­pa­gno­sics. For the other posi­tion, there is fle­xi­bi­lity on the exact nature of the pro­jects in terms of methods and spe­ci­fic topic, but a strong inte­rest in mecha­nisms of voice-iden­tity, face-iden­tity, and speech reco­gni­tion would be ideal. For examp­les of our work on these topics see von Kriegstein et al., 2008 PNAS; von Kriegstein et al., 2010 J of Neu­ro­sci­ence; Ros­wan­do­witz et al., 2014 Cur­rent Bio­logy. Teaching duties for each of the posi­ti­ons accord­ing to DAVOHS. Teaching can be done in Ger­man or in Eng­lish.

Require­ments:

uni­ver­sity degree in psy­cho­logy, neu­ro­sci­ence, cogni­tive sci­ence, medi­cine or rela­ted fields; enthu­si­asm for the field of human com­mu­ni­ca­tion; strong inte­rest in neu­ro­sci­ence and neu­ro­sci­ence methods. Expe­ri­ence with expe­ri­men­tal methods of cogni­tive neu­ro­sci­ence, such as DWI, EEG, psy­cho­phy­sics, pro­gramming, fMRI, TMS, and high level of sta­ti­s­ti­cal skills are a plus.
The TU Dres­den offers an excel­lent, inter­di­sci­pli­nary sci­en­ti­fic envi­ron­ment. Rese­arch and teaching will be car­ried out at the Depart­ment of Psy­cho­logy of the TU Dres­den, which hou­ses the Neu­ro­i­ma­ging Centre (http://www.nic-tud.de). The centre is equip­ped with a rese­arch-only 3-Tesla MRI machine, MRI-com­pa­ti­ble eye tracking, EEG sys­tems, and a neu­ro­sti­mu­la­tion unit inclu­ding neu­ro­na­vi­ga­ton, TMS and tDCS devices. All expe­ri­men­tal faci­li­ties are sup­por­ted by expe­ri­en­ced phy­sics and IT staff. For ana­ly­ses with high com­pu­ta­tio­nal demands, there is access to the TU Dres­den high-per­for­mance com­pu­ting clus­ters. There are also strong exis­ting col­la­bo­ra­ti­ons with the MPI-CBS in Leip­zig invol­ving 7Tesla-MRI, Con­nec­tome scan­ner, and MEG data acqui­si­ti­ons.
