With its research agenda, the Ger­man Inter­net Insti­tute dares a par­tic­u­larly ambi­tious form of inter­dis­cip­lin­ar­ity. Both the research agenda and the group of applic­ants com­bine eco­nomic, social and polit­ical sci­ences, law, and com­puter sci­ence, and they develop research approaches and per­spect­ives that are sys­tem­at­ic­ally linked to each other in the design of the indi­vidual research groups.
Dur­ing the build-up phase, a total of 20 inter­dis­cip­lin­ary research groups will be work­ing at the Ger­man Inter­net Insti­tute. The groups con­sist of one research group leader and two to three doc­toral stu­dents and three stu­dent assist­ants. The TU Ber­lin is involved in three research groups at the Ger­man Inter­net Insti­tute.
We are look­ing for a research group leader in the estab­lish­ment and man­age­ment of Research Group 6 "Respons­ib­il­ity and the Inter­net of Things".
The research group is about respons­ib­il­ity, trust­wor­thi­ness, reli­ab­il­ity, secur­ity and social com­pli­ance in the con­text of the Inter­net of Things (IoT). It is about under­stand­ing the legal implic­a­tions of the IoT. The impact of the IoT on the Treaty and Liab­il­ity Law serves as a ref­er­ence frame­work. The IoT is a tech­nical vis­ion in which com­puters are no longer only sta­tion­ary devices oper­ated by humans. Rather, small com­put­ing units are integ­rated into the every­day envir­on­ment (ubi­quit­ous com­put­ing) in many places and are linked to one another. Through sensors, they can per­ceive their sur­round­ings autonom­ously (sensor tech­no­logy). The inform­a­tion can be col­lec­ted and ana­lyzed. On this basis, things in the sys­tem can be actu­ated and triggered for adequate responses. All fore­casts pre­dict a drastic jump of these tech­no­lo­gies by 2020.
It is already appar­ent today that things will have more power: driver­less buses are already being used in some muni­cip­al­it­ies, house­hold robots are mar­ket-ready, and con­sumer goods can be ordered via "dash­but­tons". Under the catch­phrase of industry 4.0, pro­cesses of indus­trial pro­duc­tion are increas­ingly being con­trolled and executed by com­plex cyber-phys­ical sys­tems. These applic­a­tions prom­ise a high degree of facil­it­a­tion, effi­ciency and effect­ive­ness. They raise the ques­tion of who is respons­ible for tech­nical and legal actions - such as the issu­ing of a declar­a­tion of con­sent - or actual breaches of duty like the injury of a per­son by an autonom­ous vehicle.

Work­ing field:

  • Devel­op­ment of new research areas in the field of inter­dis­cip­lin­ary col­lab­or­a­tion in the research group "Respons­ib­il­ity and the Inter­net of Things" in the research area "Con­tract and respons­ib­il­ity in digital mar­kets"
  • Con­duct­ing sci­entific exper­i­ments to mon­itor and safe­guard IoT com­pon­ents and solu­tions, and to design and develop new meth­od­o­lo­gical, pro­ced­ural, reg­u­lat­ory and tech­no­lo­gical approaches
  • Lead and coordin­ate the research work within the research group and col­lab­or­ate with the PhD stu­dents, Research Fel­lows and Guest Lec­tur­ers
  • Coordin­a­tion of the research activ­it­ies with the two other research groups coordin­ated by the TUB, the research groups of the other pro­ject part­ners and the net­work part­ners
  • Sci­entific pub­lic­a­tions, present­a­tions and demon­stra­tion of research res­ults
  • Organ­iz­a­tion of con­fer­ences, for­ums, work­shops, etc. on the research pro­ject


  • Out­stand­ing research res­ults and an attract­ive research pro­gram
  • Exper­i­ences in the man­age­ment of inter­dis­cip­lin­ary research groups and research pro­jects
  • Suc­cess­fully com­pleted aca­demic uni­versity stud­ies in com­puter sci­ence, busi­ness inform­at­ics, legal inform­a­tion or com­par­able, as well as rel­ev­ant exper­i­ence in the over­lap­ping area of tech­no­logy (com­puter sci­ence) and social sci­ences, in par­tic­u­lar tech­no­logy soci­ology or tech­no­logy law
  • Com­pleted doc­tor­ate in com­puter sci­ence, busi­ness inform­at­ics, legal inform­at­ics or tech­no­logy soci­ology with very good res­ults
  • Very good oral and writ­ten Eng­lish skills (C1 / C2 level) and desired Ger­man lan­guage skills (C1 / C2 level)

We would like to have exper­i­ence and know­ledge in sev­eral of the fol­low­ing areas:

  • Exper­i­ence in cooper­a­tion with the national and inter­na­tional research com­munity
  • Exper­i­ence in work­ing with stake­hold­ers of the eco­nomy, civil soci­ety, polit­ics and / or admin­is­tra­tion
  • Exper­i­ence in the acquis­i­tion and imple­ment­a­tion of third party pro­jects
  • Inter­na­tional teach­ing and research exper­i­ence
