The Global Climate Forum (GCF) is a non-profit organization with headquarters in Berlin, Germany. At GCF we directly and exclusively promote scientific research on global challenges like climate change, financial crises, and the erosion of the ideal of democracy. GCF attaches particular importance to the diversity of opinions, for which it aims to provide a platform in the newly emerging global field of governments, local decision-makers, companies, social movements and scientific institutions.

Researcher Position

on Advancing Democracy Worldwide by Computer Supported Debates about Global Challenges

Working field:

Contribute to at least two research initiatives within the Green Growth team (topics are the future of the German car industry, future freshwater supply, forest protection, and deliberative democracy)

Requirements:

  • university degree in one of the following fields:
    o Social science, sustainability science, economics, computer science,
    o Depending on the accompanying skill set and experiences, applicants with other backgrounds like engineering, mathematics, and natural sciences may be considered,

  • Key skills for this position include:
    o Curiosity and ability to interpret qualitative and quantitative data,
    o Communication skills and ability to handle controversial discussions,
    o Programming and conceptualization complex processes and risks,
    o Managing teamwork
    o Administering information flows
    o Ability to read and contribute to English language research papers (German is a plus),

  • As well as:
    o Ability and willingness to work across disciplines and projects,
    o Familiarity with current economic and political debates,
    o Responsible, thorough, and structured way of working,
    o High degree of flexibility, willingness to learn, commitment and ability to work in a transdisciplinary team.

What we offer:

The researcher position offers a rare opportunity for creative research that may lead to a PhD thesis. The position has a duration of 12 months (full time and part time are possible), depending on success the position may be prolongued. A competitive salary will be paid according to profile. The position might involve international travel. When scientifically appropriate, periods of flexible teleworking are feasible.

The successful candidate will join a young, friendly, and highly motivated transdisciplinary small team, professional, dealing with bureaucracies without being one. The office lies in the heart of Berlin, at the Mercator Center, which unites a range of research institutes and NGOs.
