Tech­ni­sche Uni­ver­si­tät Dres­den - Cen­ter for Inter­di­sci­pli­nary Digi­tal Sci­en­ces, Cen­ter for Scala­ble Data Ana­ly­tics and Arti­fi­cial Intel­li­gence (ScaDS.AI)

The TU Dres­den is one of ele­ven Ger­man uni­ver­si­ties that were iden­ti­fied as an “excel­lence uni­ver­sity”. TUD has about 36.500 stu­dents and almost 5319 employees, 507 pro­fes­sors among them, and, thus, is the lar­gest uni­ver­sity in Sax­ony, today.

Having been com­mit­ted to sci­en­ces and the engi­nee­ring before the reuni­fi­ca­tion of Ger­many, TU Dres­den now is a multi-disci­pline uni­ver­sity, also offe­ring huma­nities and social sci­en­ces as well as medi­cine.

Junior Rese­arch Group "Situa­ting AI-based Men­to­ring" (m/f/x)

ScaDS.AI (Cen­ter for Scala­ble Data Ana­ly­tics and Arti­fi­cial Intel­li­gence) Dres­den/Leip­zig is a cen­ter for Data Sci­ence, Arti­fi­cial Intel­li­gence and Big Data with loca­ti­ons in Dres­den and Leip­zig. It is one of five new AI cen­ters in Ger­many fun­ded under the federal government’s AI stra­tegy and is estab­lished as a per­ma­nent rese­arch faci­lity with cur­r­ently more than 60 PIs. To pro­mote rese­arch excel­lence in the field of AI and data sci­ence, ScaDS.AI sup­ports early career rese­arch group lea­ders in this field that com­ple­ment and extend our cur­rent rese­arch areas.

At the Cen­ter for Inter­di­sci­pli­nary Digi­tal Sci­en­ces, the Depart­ment ScaDS.AI offers a the­ma­tic call to explore AI-based lear­ning:

Junior Rese­arch Group "Situa­ting AI-based Men­to­ring" (m/f/x)

Working field:

The app­li­cants should demons­trate rese­arch work on inter­ac­tive and/or AI-based sys­tems in situa­ted tea­ching and lear­ning pro­ces­ses (in for­ma­li­zed edu­ca­tion or ano­t­her area of know­ledge coope­ra­tion). These can include, for example, working with lear­ning pro­gress data and their indi­vi­dua­li­zed ad hoc inter­pre­ta­tion in real time, in the con­text of impact-based pedago­gi­cal inter­ven­ti­ons via dif­fe­rent (mobile, phy­sio­lo­gi­cal, gra­phic, phy­si­cal, etc.) inter­faces. App­li­ca­ti­ons can be found, for example, in the form of AI-sup­por­ted lear­ner eva­lua­tion, as a com­pa­ri­son bet­ween lear­ning and know­ledge levels, when using pro­cess-accom­pany­ing data on lear­ning activity. Other fields of work con­cern trust­worthy infra­st­ruc­ture when working with lear­ner data, in the sense of an open lear­ning record store. The ques­tion of pos­si­ble "new" data types rela­ting to the genera­tion of data through data and their use at meta and micro level is also being rese­ar­ched. The over­ar­ching focus can be the dis­ad­van­tage-free AI-sup­por­ted design of the tea­ching and men­to­ring pro­ces­ses and their eva­lua­tion on the basis of pro­cess data, rela­ted to both human and machine lear­ners, and fol­lows up on cur­rent ethi­cal deba­tes.

Requirements:

ELI­GI­BI­LITY
Out­stan­ding rese­ar­chers (uni­ver­sity degree and for the PI an addi­tio­nal PhD degree (or equi­va­lent)) with a pro­ven rese­arch track record in data sci­ence and AI inclu­ding cur­rent junior pro­fes­sors or group lea­ders. We are pri­ma­rily loo­king for inter­na­tio­nal app­li­cants.

DURATION AND SCOPE
Applic­a­tions are invited for this junior research group that shall start in 2022 or early 2023 with a dur­a­tion of 24 to 36 months. An exten­sion after a pos­it­ive eval­u­ation for up to 36 months is pos­sible. The period of employ­ment is gov­erned by the Fixed Term Research Con­tracts Act (Wis­senschaft­szeitver­trags­ge­setz - Wis­sZeitVG). A junior research group must con­sist of a junior research group leader and research assist­ants – depend­ing on the dur­a­tion of the group and the qual­ity of the research pro­posal, up to two addi­tional pos­i­tions for research assist­ants will be fun­ded by ScaDS.AI. The fund­ing will include trav­el­ing expenses as well as con­sum­ables. Earli­est start of the fund­ing: Septem­ber 1, 2022.

APP­LI­CA­TION DOCU­MENTS
Your app­li­ca­tion should con­tain:
  • cover Let­ter,
  • a sci­en­ti­fic pro­po­sal of about five pages for the time period plan­ned at ScaDS.AI,
  • detailed CV, inclu­ding list of publi­ca­ti­ons, work in pro­gress, rese­arch ser­vice, men­to­ring expe­ri­ence and tea­ching expe­ri­ence,
  • CVs of rese­arch assi­stants (if app­li­ca­ble),
  • two to three let­ters of refe­rence.

SELEC­TION PRO­CE­DURE
ScaDS.AI imple­ments a selec­tion com­mit­tee that con­sists of a num­ber of PIs from the two loca­ti­ons of ScaDS.AI. This invol­ves the rese­arch area leads and addi­tio­nally one PI from each rese­arch area. Addi­tio­nally, an equal oppor­tu­nities offi­cer will be part of the com­mit­tee.
