The Leib­niz Insti­tute for Solid State and Mater­i­als Research Dresden (IFW Dresden) is a non-uni­versity research insti­tute and a mem­ber of the Leib­niz Asso­ci­ation. The IFW employs approx­im­ately 600 people and one focus is on the train­ing of young sci­ent­ists (m/f/d) besides enhan­cing fun­da­mental and applied research devel­op­ment. At the highest inter­na­tional level, the IFW oper­ates mod­ern mater­i­als sci­ence on a sci­entific basis and makes the obtained res­ults use­ful for the eco­nomy. The com­plex and inter­dis­cip­lin­ary research work is car­ried out within the IFW by five sci­entific insti­tutes, which are sup­por­ted by a highly developed tech­nical infra­struc­ture. Sus­tain­able Func­tional Mater­i­als

Working field:

syn­thesis and char­ac­ter­iz­a­tion of abund­ant nano­struc­tured mater­i­als or mater­i­als for energy applic­a­tions

Requirements:

The Insti­tute for Metal­lic Mater­i­als (IMW) of the Leib­niz Insti­tute for Solid State and Mater­i­als Research Dresden (IFW Dresden) offers a Junior Research Group Leader pos­i­tion for can­did­ates (m/f/d) with exper­i­ences in the syn­thesis and char­ac­ter­iz­a­tion of abund­ant nano­struc­tured mater­i­als or mater­i­als for energy applic­a­tions. The IMW has already a set of syn­thesis meth­ods avail­able, like Atomic Layer Depos­ition (thin films and powders), elec­tro­chem­ical depos­ition, microsys­tem tech­no­lo­gies/MEMS and mech­an­ical alloy­ing and is open for fur­ther exten­sions on the meth­od­o­logy or fur­ther devel­op­ments of the exist­ing meth­od­o­lo­gies. We pro­mote the mater­ial devel­op­ment for device integ­ra­tion and test­ing of mater­i­als in devices under harsh con­di­tions.

Your pro­file:

The applic­ant (m/f/d) should have a com­pleted PhD in mater­i­als sci­ence, applied phys­ics, phys­ical chem­istry, inor­ganic chem­istry or elec­trical engin­eer­ing and research exper­i­ences as a postdoc­toral asso­ci­ate or fel­low of at least two years.
The Junior Research Group Leader (m/f/d) may expand the exist­ing research pro­file of IMW and work on one of the fol­low­ing or related research top­ics in the future:

  • Func­tional mater­i­als from abund­ant ele­ments, from recyc­ling or pro­cessing with small CO2 foot­print
  • Devel­op­ment of flex­ible or micro­struc­tured devices from abund­ant mater­i­als or based on recyc­ling of mater­i­als
  • Accel­er­ated mater­i­als devel­op­ment based on datamin­ing or com­bin­at­or­ial mater­i­als syn­thesis
  • Bio­lo­gical inspired mater­i­als or hier­arch­ical mater­i­als or organic hybrid mater­i­als

What we offer:

The pos­i­tion (100 %, part-time is pos­sible) is remu­ner­ated accord­ing to the Ger­man tar­iff TV-L E14. It is pro­vi­sion­ally lim­ited to 2 years start­ing with an ori­ent­a­tion phase, in which the research asso­ci­ate builds up his/her own research pro­file and pre­pares pro­ject pro­pos­als for third party fund­ing. Upon proof of inde­pend­ent pub­lic­a­tions at IFW and the suc­cess­ful acquis­i­tion of a third-party fun­ded pro­ject, the junior research group leader pos­i­tion will be exten­ded by 2 plus 2 years. The second phase focuses on the devel­op­ment of the researcher’s own research pro­file and the estab­lish­ment of his or her own research group. In the third phase, the focus will be on the qual­i­fic­a­tion of the junior research group leader (m/f/d), aim­ing at the com­ple­tion of his or her habil­it­a­tion with teach­ing exper­i­ences and the suc­cess­ful acquis­i­tion of an ERC-Start­ing Grant or a com­par­able pro­ject.
